Robusto Salvation
It is Easter Sunday, the annual reminder that marshmallow Peeps are a crime against nature. My family and I are very fond of “peep wars” (where you put the peeps in the microwave with toothpicks sticking out of them and watch them expand and whoever’s peep gets hit with a toothpick they win. After surviving the same same ole early dinner I have with my in-laws every year, I needed some salvation of my own—preferably in Robusto form. Enter the Cuba Aliados by E.P. Carrillo, a cigar so smooth it could possibly make me attend church services.
This Robusto stick (Ecuadorian wrapper, Nicaraguan binder, and Dominican/Nicaraguan fillers) is no hollow chocolate bunny—it’s the real deal. The cigar has some interesting smells to it (don’t get weird). I got aromas of toasted cedar, barnyard (the good kind, not “I stepped in something”), and a faint hint of cinnamon that made me suspicious.
Hit Like a Hallelujah Chorus
The first half hit like the hallelujah chorus. I received notes of earth, black pepper, and leather that had a bit of an attitude. It is bold and the flavors work well together. There was a very small hint of cocoa at the end of the first half, that was like a “sweet surprise.”
Smooth, Caramel Sweetness
In the second half, things mellowed into a smooth, caramel sweetness I can only describe as "Cadbury egg for grown-ups." There was also a bit of nuttiness too, but I was already two beverages in, so I am hoping that was the case. I was also in a serious competition with my brother in law and his girlfriend with one my favorite games, Kube. The draw and burn have both been great so far with no issues. The smoke is HEAVY. So much of it.
Towards the end of my smoke, the spice returned at full speed. The strength ramped up, which I appreciated (full bodied definitely)—Easter lunch had descended into a Lord of the Flies situation once the deviled eggs ran out. The cigar at least kept me from running over to eat more with notes of coffee and pepper that finished my smoke. I also had major guilt after stealing some of my kids candy from his Easter basket (mom tax?).
Overall, I really enjoyed this stick.
