Setting the Mood
There are few things better than lighting up a fine cigar under a blue sky with Metallica on the weekend horizon. Before the guitars roar and the pyro flares, I decided to spend some quiet time in the sunshine getting my head right—with a Cohiba Nicaragua N52 in one hand and the kind of smug satisfaction that only comes from knowing you’ve got two nights of Metallica ahead, with both Pantera and Limp Bizkit to boot.
First Look: Sleek, Elegant, and Heavy in Hand
Let’s talk about the looks of this stick. The N52 isn’t flashy—it’s so elegant. This box-pressed beauty wears a dark, oily Nicaraguan Oscuro wrapper like a leather jacket. It practically dares you to light it. The band screams expensive without being obnoxious about it, and the cigar itself is heavy in the hand.
Cold Draw & Light Up: The Calm Before the Storm
The cold draw gives you a little coffee, some cocoa, and just a touch of that classic Nicaraguan spice—like the calm before the storm. Once I lit the cigar, it opened with black pepper, Earth tones, and even more coffee. It took me back a bit and gave me a little punch. But I didn’t hate it. I was too busy enjoying the sunshine on my patio, rocking my red, white, and blue swimsuit.
First Half: Smooth and Gritty All at Once
I sat back in a patio chair, sun on my face, and let the cigar do its thing. The first half of my smoke gave me more Earth tones, dark chocolate, and leathery notes that reminded me of James Hetfield’s voice circa Ride the Lightning—and most likely the outfit I’ll be wearing over the weekend. The pepper started to drift away as it moved toward the halfway mark.
Second Half: Complex and Dark Like a Metal Classic
Midway through, the cigar evolved into something darker and more complex, like the ...And Justice for All of cigars. There were notes of black licorice (not a fan, I admit), along with a bitter fruitiness and a toasty nuttiness that kept my palate doing weird things. The draw stayed open and easy. I’d give a funny joke here, but it doesn’t seem appropriate (I think you know).
Construction: Flawless Burn and Ash
Now, construction? Flawless. The burn line was tighter than a pair of butt cheeks, and the ash stacked perfectly. No touch-ups, no drama—just solid, consistent performance. Even when the wind picked up a little more than I wanted it to that afternoon.
Final Third: Flavor Turns Up to Eleven
During the final half of my smoke, the flavors became even more intense than before. More coffee. More leather. A little smoked spiciness—if that’s even a thing cigars can do. It was like the cigar knew I was gearing up for back-to-back Metallica shows and had to stay awake and power through. I’m old now, and staying up late is hard for me.
Refined, Loud, and Built to Last
The Cohiba Nicaragua N52 is bold, loud, and refined enough to hold its own—even when I’m not fully concentrating on the day ahead but just looking forward to the weekend.
If you want a smoke that matches the energy of a hard rock band, this one’s for you. I may need to take a nap and pop some Ibuprofen beforehand.
