There’s something special about sitting on the back porch with a good cigar and absolutely nowhere important to be. The birds are chirping, the neighbors are doing whatever mysterious things neighbors do (mine are currently yelling on the phone at the moment), and I’m kicking back with a Cohiba Black Robusto while mentally preparing for two very different adventures: an upcoming trip to Lake Placid, New York, and a quick run home to Florida.

For smokers seeking a rich, deeply satisfying premium smoke, this General Cigar Co. classic walks right into the room, sits in your favorite chair, and commands attention with its unapologetically bold profile.

First Impressions: A Dark, Oily Broadleaf Masterpiece

The Cohiba Black Robusto comes dressed in a dark, oily Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper that looks like it means business. Right out of the gate, the cigar delivers rich notes of espresso, dark chocolate, and heavy earth tones. This isn’t a cigar that politely introduces itself. It walks right into the room, sits in your favorite chair, and starts telling stories. I know quite a few cigar smokers like that.

Meticulously rolled under strict quality standards in the Dominican Republic, the presentation is strikingly upscale. The draw on this stick was excellent. It provided plenty of thick smoke output without feeling loose at all.

The burn line was a bit wonky with the wind today; however, I was quite distracted with watching squirrels engaging in what appeared to be a full-contact MMA tournament in my backyard.

As the first half progressed, I picked up distinct flavors of black pepper, roasted coffee, and a subtle, dark sweetness that reminded me of rich syrup.

Staff Notes: Our staff noted that the sweetness in the Cohiba Black comes naturally from the intensive fermentation of its extra-aged Broadleaf wrapper, which balances out the punchy Piloto Cubano filler leaves.

The strength sits comfortably in the medium-to-full range, making it a highly satisfying smoke without requiring a nap afterward or a piece of candy. Although, if you do fall asleep in your porch chair, I won’t judge. I’ve come dangerously close myself and burning a hole in my shorts.

The Middle Third: Complex Transitions of Cocoa and Leather

The second half is where the Cohiba Black really shines. The upfront black pepper softens beautifully, allowing much richer, smoother flavors to emerge. Distinct notes of cocoa, rustic leather, and a touch of cedar create a complex profile that keeps things highly interesting. It’s the exact kind of cigar that forces you to slow down and appreciate the moment rather than constantly checking your phone.

Speaking of slowing down, Lake Placid is right around the corner. There’s something deeply appealing about heading north to the Adirondacks, taking in the mountain views, and escaping the daily grind for a few days. I can already picture a cool evening by Mirror Lake with a cigar in hand, pretending I’m training for the Olympics simply because I’m standing near where they hosted the Winter Games. Looking at mountains burns calories, right? I see a lot of long walks in my future.

Then there’s Florida. Home. Sunshine, palm trees, humidity thick enough to chew, and enough memories to fill a hundred cigars’ worth of conversations. Every trip back reminds me why I love it and why I can’t wait to move back home in a few years. Florida has a way of welcoming you home with a hug and immediately making you sweat through your shirt.

The Final Third: A Powerful, Intense Finale

As I reached the final third of the Cohiba Black Robusto, the flavors intensified beautifully. The dominant espresso and dark chocolate returned to center stage, supported by heavy earth tones and just enough residual spice to keep the profile perfectly balanced.

The construction remained a bit wonky to the nub, which needed to be touched up with my torch lighter often—likely due to the breeze—but the flavor never wavered.

The Cohiba Black Robusto is a rich, exceptionally flavorful cigar that rewards patience and pairs perfectly with a quiet afternoon on the porch. It’s bold without being overwhelming, wonderfully complex, and thoroughly enjoyable from first light to final puff. Much like a good trip, it leaves you eagerly looking forward to the next one.
