Not for the Faint of Heart
Let’s get one thing straight before the start of this review: the Boneshaker Mace is not a cigar for delicate palates, faint hearts, or anyone who still uses flavored vapes. This little beefy Nicaraguan monster rolls up to the lounge with a leather jacket, a bandana, and a fistful of black pepper. It’s mighty, it’s bold, and it might try to fight your taste buds. But if you’re brave (or foolish) enough to light it up, you’re in for one heck of an experience.
A Bold First Impression
Wrapped in a dark, toothy Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper that looks like it’s been through a few bar brawls and come out victorious, the Mace is intimidating before you even strike the match. The cold draw is earthy, peppery, and slightly confusing, with hints of cocoa and leather. This is not your everyday calm cigar. This is a throat punch after a rather long day at work.
First Third: Pepper Bomb Incoming
The first half hits harder than when my ten-year-old accidentally drank my iced coffee. Sudden boom: black pepper. Big bang: BBQ oak. Kung pow: coffee flavors so strong it might just make me want to stop smoking. The retrohale hurts my nostril and makes my nose run. My lips also feel like they are on fire, and I desperately drink a lot of water.
Second Third: Surprise Sweetness
But here’s where things get interesting—just like a heavy metal song that suddenly adds a violin, the Mace begins to mellow out at the halfway point. Still full-bodied, mind you, but now you’re getting a smooth caramel sweetness and hints of dark chocolate. There’s even a little fruity taste in there if your sinuses have survived the first round. The burn line, surprisingly, stays nice and straight, which is a miracle considering this cigar looks like a small log.
Final Third: The Return of the Beast
The final third is where this cigar earns its tough name again. The pepper returns with a vengeance, like a sequel that nobody asked for but secretly loves (i.e. Terminator 2, Back to the Future, The Godfather Part II)—you get it. The strength ramps up, the flavors grow, and by the time you reach the nub, you’re sweating a little (despite the heat still)—but also trying not to burn your face off. Like after you have ridden your first rollercoaster and you are still in shock over how crazy it was.
Boneshaker is Not a Beginner’s Cigar
It’s a full-bodied powerhouse designed for seasoned smokers who want flavor, strength, and a little chaos. Is it something I would smoke often? No, but it is an experience. Don’t judge a cigar by its rough exterior, and for the love of your lunch—don’t retrohale this thing on an empty stomach. Been there, done that.
