Known for their potent and sometimes unrefined character, longleaf from the highest parts of the plant are nonetheless packed with flavor and tobacco guru Henke Kelner uses this fact to his advantage while also playing to his own strengths in creating refined smokes. By blending finely aged ligero from Esteli and seco from Condega with a variety of Dominican tobaccos finished with a Mexican San Andres binder and Ecuadorian Habano 2000 wrapper, Kelner has tamed the beast ever so slightly into a masterful creation.
Exquisitely built by some of the best torcedors in the business, the AVO Synchro Nicaragua Fogata Toro bursts from its protective cellophane with a rush of leather and cedar aroma, the generous 6" x 54 body of the cigar soft to the touch but sturdy beneath the walnut colored wrapper. From the start, the Nicaraguan ligero plus some Dominican San Vicente ligero adds a definite bite to the smoke, weaving black pepper and char into a foundation upon which all other flavors reside. However, more rounded flavors like roast coffee, salted caramel, cinnamon and orange peel are also present to temper the experience and create a lasting impression that will linger long after the final puffs are taken.
In Spanish, the name Fogata means bonfire or campfire, and sitting around either with a plastic cup half full of cask-strength bourbon or a can of cold, cheap beer would be a perfect place to burn one of these special occasion cigars.
