Asylum Petit Corona 44x4 Cigars
Asylum Petit Corona 44x4 is a true gem of a cigar that rarely appears in today’s headlines, yet remains an extremely highly-regarded stick made for true connoisseurs. Crafted in Honduras under the CLE Cigar Company umbrella, Asylum was one of the first dynamic projects from industry powerhouse Christian Eiroa following his departure from Camacho. This line provided Eiroa with the opportunity to establish his own independent label and demonstrate his mastery in blending full-bodied, impeccably balanced smokes. Known officially as Asylum Premium, the blend steps outside of Eiroa’s traditional reliance on Honduran leaf by pairing a core of Nicaraguan binder and filler tobaccos with a dark, oily Nicaraguan wrapper leaf. Eiroa proved completely comfortable working with spicy Nicaraguan tobacco, creating a blend line that achieved multiple 90+ ratings and secured the #16 spot on the 2013 Cigar Aficionado Top 25 list for its Small Churchill format.
Visually striking with simple, bold packaging featuring the trademark Asylum skull, the cigar itself is masterfully constructed with an oily wrapper and precise hand-rolling. While not quite as overwhelmingly intense as some of Eiroa's historically heaviest releases, the profile lands firmly on the fuller end of medium-full strength, maintaining total balance without overwhelming the palate. The 44x4 vitola delivers an easy draw and generous volume of rich smoke. The smoking experience opens with a bold cedar blast and a dense earthy core, quickly accompanied by smooth notes of brewed coffee and dark chocolate. Throughout the burn, a lively wave of Nicaraguan spice and black pepper coats the palate. The finish remains clean and smooth, offering complex transitions suited for a small-format cigar. The 4" x 44 Petit Corona size concentrates these flavors, allowing the raw strength and spice of the wrapper leaf to shine through in a shorter timeframe.
Asylum Petit Corona 44x4 is crafted primarily for an experienced audience capable of appreciating a complex, tobacco-forward profile. Its rich construction and medium-full strength make it an ideal choice to enjoy after a hearty meal. This vitola pairs exceptionally well with aged bourbon, single malt scotch, or port wine. Those who enjoy other lines from the CLE portfolio, such as Asylum 13, Asylum 13 Corojo, and Asylum Insidious, will find a familiar level of craftsmanship here. The name might seem aggressive at first glance, but it makes perfect sense given how dedicated enthusiasts have gone crazy over the Asylum Petit Corona 44x4.
