Asylum Nyctophilia 70x7 Cigars
Asylum Cigars have officially had their darkest moment, and believe it or not, that’s a good thing! Asylum Nyctophilia 70x7 takes everything you have come to know and love about the famed original Asylum premium brand and turns it to the dark side. Made in Honduras at Christian Eiroa’s El Aladino factory, this flavor bomb is lavishly layered with only the most premium aged maduro leaves from the inside out. The filler blend consists of dark Nicaraguan leaves, and the binder also hails from Nicaragua. The wrapper is a chocolate brown San Andres wrapper from Mexico, which some consider to be the finest maduro tobacco in the world. This blend mixes classic maduro flavor with bold Nicaraguan body and spice, producing one of the biggest, baddest, most powerful sticks to ever bear the Asylum name.
At first glance, the bands closely resemble those worn by the original Asylum blend. The black cedar chest neatly nestling the beautiful vitolas is nearly humidor-grade, and it, too, bears the unmistakable Asylum winged skull motif. Each cigar is expertly rolled and undergoes rigorous quality control measures to ensure maximum performance, and that is exactly what you are going to get every time. An easy draw effortlessly produces copious clouds of thick, white smoke, each puff pounding the palate hard with new flavors as the slow-burning cigar tells its story. The initial blast consists of earthy black pepper and cinnamon, with a heavy oak note lingering in the background. The rich tobacco core dominates throughout the experience, forming a solid backbone for the vast array of both sweet and savory notes as the cigar progresses. Dark chocolate, espresso, and cayenne dance around on the back of the tongue, and the finish is long, earthy, and spicy. Overall, Asylum Nyctophilia finishes as an in-your-face full-bodied powerhouse, something quite reminiscent of the relentless monsters blended by Christian Eiroa in his early years. Coming in at 7” x 70, the 70x7 is a beast of a cigar, offering hours upon hours of rich, spicy smoking pleasure.
It is clear to see that Christian Eiroa and his partner in crime, Tom Lazuka, had a blast coming up with this one. It is an all-out awakening of the senses to enjoy such a powerful specimen, and for most, this one should be quite a welcomed change-of-pace. Beginners need not apply; this bad boy is reserved for the experienced. This stick pairs well with a solid bourbon or a cold, dark beer, but strong black coffee would quickly make friends with it, as well. Full-bodied maduro sticks such as Padron Maduro or La Historia by EP Carrillo share similar attributes, so it’s safe to say that if you gravitate towards either, this one is a must-try. Nyctophilia is literally defined as “The love of darkness,” or “being happy or comfortable in the dark.” Don’t be afraid of the dark—embrace it! At least when it comes to Asylum Nyctophilia 70x7, that is.
