Here, we have a brand that was originally produced in Havana in 1880. Fast forward about a century and a half, and new life is given to the name by none other than the fine folks at Warped, in collaboration with AGANORSA, of course. Blended by Kyle Gellis, and like so many other amazing Warped blends, Nicotina is a true Nicaraguan puro, made in Nicaragua at the TABSA factory using nothing but the finest Nicaraguan leaves from the AGANORSA vault—wrapper, filler, and binder. The filler blend is made up of Nicaraguan Criollo ‘98 and Corojo ‘99, and the wrapper is a shade grown Jalapa Corojo ‘99 grown in Nicaragua (an extremely rare specimen in and of itself). Straight out of the gate, Nicotina earned a solid 91 rating in Cigar Aficionado and to this day remains one of Warped’s most successful regular brands.

Beautifully simple packaging adds to the splendor of the brand. Simple wooden chests, black and white bands, and nearly nondescript branding make Nicotina as mysterious as it is beautiful. Speaking of its beauty, Nicotina comes in one size: a 5 ½” x 52 box pressed 109, or gentle belicoso, as some would describe it. The slightly tapered head makes for easy cuts, a comfy feel between the teeth, and concentrated, rich flavor. The easy and productive draw of Nicotina produces continuous strands of silky blue smoke, the clouds increasing in size with each puff. Beginning with red pepper and cedar, the flavor profile seems simple and straightforward at first. However, an inch or two in and the real beauty of Nicotina makes itself known: a dazzling array of creamy sweet tobacco, spicy Nicaraguan white pepper, and blasts of chocolate dancing around in the background. An earthy core holds the package together, and the finish is crisp, clean, and strong. This blend finishes as a true full-bodied stick, and appropriately so, as Nicotina is literally Spanish for “Nicotine.”

Only the experienced should reach for this cigar. Not only is the profile far too complex to be appreciated by an immature palate, but the strength would be too much for any mere newbie. This full-bodied work of art pairs well with coffee, red wine, or full-bodied beer, and is best enjoyed on a full stomach. It is likely to appeal to a more mature audience, those drawn to full-bodied Nicaraguan cigars such as My Father or Don Pepin Blue Label.
