Futuro is one of the earliest big hits to bear the name of Warped Cigars, then a respectable, yet tiny and up-and-coming boutique cigar brand with little more than a cult following. Now, nearly a decade after Futuro’s release, Warped is somewhat of a household name among cigar connoisseurs and those that love the tasty and unique creations brought about by boutique companies. Futuro, however, is not a stick that is made in-house, so to speak, by Warped. Rather, it is a collaboration with Max Fernandez Pujals of Casa Fernandez and AGANORSA, a brand that even back in the day had a rock-solid stance in the world of premium cigars. Together, the two names came up with a blend that would basically put Warped Cigars on the map, and appropriately so, as Futuro is literally translated from Spanish as “Future.” Made at Fernandez’s TABSA in Nicaragua, Futuro’s blend consists of Nicaraguan Corojo 98 and Corojo 99 filler leaves, a Nicaraguan Criollo 98 binder, and a spicy Nicaraguan Corojo 99 wrapper leaf. This Nicaraguan puro garnered so much positive feedback that it quickly earned several 90 ratings in Cigar Aficionado and has been a staple for the brand ever since its 2015 release.

Packaged neatly in classic cedar chests and wearing only a simple band bearing its name, Futuro, like many warped cigars, is for lack of a better term a “sleeper” cigar—one that looks basic and unembellished on the outside but when cut and lit up tells a very exciting story. The construction is impeccable, in true Casa Fernandez fashion, yielding an easy draw, sharp burn, and stable, thick ash that holds on long and tight. Immediately upon lighting, a blast of white pepper greets the palate, soon transitioning into a medley of oak, cinnamon, and sweet bakers’ spices. Creamy vanilla and hints of floral notes dance around in the background, along with a crisp toasty nuance every so often. A core of earthy tobacco holds the package together, and the finish is clean, spicy, and robust. Medium to full-bodied and delightfully balanced, Futuro is a true connoisseurs’ cigar.

Made with the discriminating aficionado in mind, Warped Futuro is meant for a more mature and seasoned audience. A well-developed palate is a must if one is to appreciate all the immense flavor offered by the blend of AGANORSA’s most prized “Vault” tobacco featured here. Single malt scotch or port wine would make a fine accompaniment for this stick, and ample time to sit back, relax, and truly enjoy the luxurious flavor profile is a must. Fans of other premium Nicaraguan sticks such as Padron or Casa Fernandez should definitely check out this cigar, as its body and flavor profile certainly is comparable. When it was released, Warped Futuro was meant to be a “Homage to the Future.” Today, it is likely that after trying one yourself, you will make future plans of your own to keep coming back to it.
