During the long and exhausting process of putting together blends that would potentially become Montecristo 1935 Anniversary Nicaragua, AJ Fernandez and Rafael Nodal settled on two final candidates. One of those went on to become the targeted cigar, but the other just “needed a bit more age.” Fast forward a few years, and the one that needed to age further would become one of the finest cigars to ever wear a Montecristo band: Montecristo 1935 Anniversary Edicion Diamante. Translated as “Diamond Edition,” this Nicaraguan puro is made by hand at Nicaragua’s own San Lotano factory under the supervision of AJ Fernandez himself. The recipe contains all Nicaraguan leaves—wrapper, filler, and binder. The wrapper is the star of the show, a low-priming hybrid wrapper grown in Jalapa, one of Nicaragua’s richest growing regions. Patience proved to be a winning strategy with this one, as the extra few years of aging indubitably transformed good tobacco into incredible tobacco. So incredible, in fact, that this blend promptly earned a pair of respectable 93 ratings in Cigar Aficionado, along with a spot on the famed magazine’s Top 25 Cigars of 2023.

The packaging is classic Montecristo style mixed with some special edition flare. The brown and gold bands feature a diamond logo, making it easy to differentiate between Edition Diamante and the original 1935. Each and every vitola is lovingly constructed and checked over multiple times to ensure an easy draw, a sharp burn, and plenty of voluminous, thick smoke with each and every puff. This cigar starts off with a heavy dose of spicy Nicaraguan pepper, soon smoothing out to an array of cocoa, nuts, and cedar. Leathery, earthy flavors seem to be the main theme of the flavor profile, while touches of dark chocolate and bakers’ spices adorn the retrohale. The finish is smooth, spicy, and rich, and overall, this stick finishes at the very strong end of medium-full-bodied.
