In recent years, there’s been an ongoing trend of resurrecting cigar brands that were once household names, but have all but vanished along the years as the cigar industry evolved. One of the more anticipated of these resurrections, Cuba Aliados by E.P. Carrillo has caused quite a stir in the community. After all, who better than the “Godfather of Boutique Cigars” to be tasked with giving new life to an old name? After Oliva recently purchased the rights to both Cuba Aliados and Puros Indios, they decided to split the Cuba Aliados into two separate lines—the standard regular production line, made in Honduras by Julio Eiroa, and this one, said to be limited to a total production of 15,000 boxes, all made at Tabacalera La Alianza in the Dominican Republic under the supervision of Ernesto Perez-Carrillo Jr. The blend is something you might expect from the man himself, incorporating a Dominican and Nicaraguan filler blend, a Nicaraguan binder, and, of course, E.P. Carrillo’s signature Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper leaf. The blend must have worked, as soon after its release it earned a rock-solid 94 rating in Cigar Aficionado.
