Crafted in Nicaragua by AJ Fernandez, Aksum Claro pays tribute to the Aksumite Kingdom, an ancient civilization near modern-day Ethiopia. According to legend, the Ark of the Covenant was brought to Aksum by Menelik I, the supposed son of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba. Local lore claims the Ark remains there to this day, guarded around the clock by a single priest. This blend, rich in flavor and artistry, is a fitting nod to such a legendary tale.
The blend features a Nicaraguan filler, a Connecticut Broadleaf binder, and a stunning Sumatra Claro wrapper grown in the volcanic soil of Ecuador. While Nicholas Melillo’s creation may appear straightforward on paper, lighting one up reveals something truly special. Cigar Aficionado took notice, awarding Aksum Claro multiple 90+ ratings, with the highest reaching an impressive 93. That same year, it earned a spot in the magazine’s prestigious Top 25 Cigars of the Year.
Each meticulously crafted vitola is housed in a refined cedar chest topped with a black and gold lid. A single blue and red band featuring a portrait of Ras Makonnen, a 19th-century governor of the Aksumite Kingdom, adorns every cigar. The construction is flawless, ensuring a smooth and effortless draw. Upon lighting, an explosion of spicy Nicaraguan pepper greets the palate, followed by bold waves of espresso and nuts. Woody undertones frame the flavor profile, while an earthy, raw tobacco core ties everything together in perfect harmony. The finish remains lively and spicy, with a lingering touch of white pepper on the tongue.
