Asylum Petit Corona or 44 x 4 is a cigar that has quietly climbed to the top and is becoming more and more sought after, especially after being named one of Cigar Aficionado's Top 25 of 2013. Asylum was destined for greatness from its inception, as the man behind the cigar is none other than the king of powerhouse cigars himself, Christian Eiroa, who is best known for the original 94-rated Camacho blend from the early 2000s. Asylum is a Nicaraguan puro—filler, binder, and wrapper, and is made in Eiroa's state-of-the-art factory in Honduras. Although not quite as mind-numbing strength-wise as we're used to from Christian Eiroa, Asylum is complex, ultra-refined, and an all-out masterpiece of a cigar.

Asylum begins with a blast of cedar, which quickly transforms into a vast array of earthy, toasty flavors. The Nicaraguan spice makes its presence known, as well as speckled hints of coffee and chocolate throughout the experience. The finish is ultra-clean and the smoke is incomparably thick, coating the palate like smooth tobacco syrup.

Intended for fine connoisseurs, Asylum has become known as one of the new-age greats. Any true aficionado would be hard-pressed to find anything wrong with this cigar, as it seems every aspect has been all but perfected. Asylum pairs well with bourbon, scotch, and port wine and is comparable to CLE Cuarenta and Don Pepin Black Label. At first thought, the name seems out of place for such an incredible smoke, but things come into perspective in that people everywhere have gone absolutely “crazy” over Asylum cigars.
