The Padilla Reserva Habano Short Robusto cigar is hereby serving notice that Ernesto Padilla is back. Back big. Now that you think about it, you really haven't noticed many Padillas around lately, have you? Strange at it may sound for brand with a plethora of 90-plus ratings, this was by design. Ernesto wanted to get back to his roots as a boutique cigar maker so he discontinued a number of his too-big-to-fail frontmarks, hid away in what was probably a really cool and inspirational man-cave, and came out bearing the Padilla Reserva line. The Habano version is graced with an sleek Ecuadorian wrapper laid over a triple threat of Nicaraguan fillers from Esteli, Jalapa, and Condega.

A double band with a confident lion's portrait lends a regal air to the perfectly crafted vitola, the leathery Habano wrapper equally impressive yet far more than merely decorative. Covering the cigar like an oily shield, it cuts cleanly to reveal layer after layer of striated tobaccos at the core. The first puffs are cool and creamy, offering notes of cedar and mild spice. As the smoke progresses, it develops a deep, earthy undercurrent that the palate first perceives as a tangy mineral flavor. This mellows after the halfway mark to allow a nutty profile with hints of espresso to shine through.

Picking right up where he left off, Padilla has another winner in the Reserva Habano cigar. With a complexity that rivals some of his previous smokes and a medium to full body, this cigar should please any connoisseur. While they're still in stock, you might want to compare to some of Ernesto's older cigars like the spectacular Padilla Signature 1932.
