The A. Turrent Triple Play cigar strides a path few have attempted and in doing so is able to reach heights unattainable by lesser Maduros. The master blenders at the La Flor de Copan factory in Honduras, under the direction of fifth-generation cigar maker Alejandro Turrent, have successfully forged a full-flavored stogie using nothing but thick, lush tobacco naturally fermented to a rich Maduro color and taste. The filler sourced from Nicaragua, Honduras, and Mexico is hearty enough to be a Maduro lover's delight by itself, but the dark Connecticut Broadleaf binder and San Andrés Morrón wrapper take the experience to the pinnacle of enjoyment.

A bright aroma like pencil shavings mixed with alfalfa steps lively from the smooth, milk chocolate brown wrapper while darker leaves can be seen woven within the well-bunched core. A straight or V-cut is the best way to get at the full depth of flavors available and the first puffs of a lit Triple Play offer dry cocoa backed by hints of cedar, but at some point during the first third a characteristic Maduro sweetness kicks in. Some spiciness can be found standing astride the midpoint, but this soon fades to let the earthy cane syrup notes and raisin-like undertones continue to shine. Near the end of the journey a woodsy-sweet impression, akin to chewing on a cherry stem, makes for an interesting and pleasing finale.

More controlled for an all-Maduro cigar than other similar sticks, the A. Turrent Triple Play is accessible to any lover of the dark leaf who prefers subtlety over raw power by topping out at medium-full in body, reminiscent of the CAO MX2. Pair this fine cigar with a spicy rye whiskey for an excellent accompaniment, whether sipped neat or in a savory Sazerac.
