5¢ for an El Baton cigar? Only if you were living and smoking in 1914 when the El Baton Belicoso was first introduced. Destined for the discard pile of history not long afterward, the J.C. Newman Cigar Company has resurrected the frontmark with a blend to appeal to today's aficionados. Using tobacco sourced from all over Nicaragua for filler, binder, and especially the beautiful Corojo wrapper, this cigar retains a high value-to-price ratio considering it has garnered a nice collection of 90-plus ratings and a Top-25 of 2012 honor from Cigar Aficionado.

Adorned with a classy band of blue and silver scripted with gold, the russet Corojo skin of the El Baton Belicoso is a magnificent example of the quality of leaf available in Nicaraguan cigars: smooth and shiny, minimally veined, reeking of the aroma of fresh-cut hay. The taste of cedar is abundant in the cold draw, the thick filler offering just the right amount of resistance. After lighting, the cigar exudes a significant leather component, a bit of black pepper, and some oak. Midway, earthy cocoa becomes evident but watch out as the ash is somewhat flaky and prone to fall if over an inch long. The woodiness increases along with the strength towards the end with a drop of cane-syrup sweetness for balance.

Reminiscent of the Gran Habano Corojo #5 and the Perdomo Habano Corojo, the El Baton can and should be sought out by smokers who enjoy robust Nicaraguan Puros. At less than $5 a stick, you might even want to make room in your humidor for two boxes.
