The Ortega Serie D cigar is the first line out of the newly formed Ortega Cigar Company, but that doesn't mean the man behind the cigar doesn't know what he's doing. Eddie Ortega was the 'O' in EO Cigars where he helped to build a reputation for complex and flavorful cigars developed and rolled in the famous My Father Cigars factory owned by Don Pepin, including the 601 line and Cubao. After selling 50% of EO Cigars, also known as United Tobacco, to Rocky Patel in 2010, Ortega felt the call to strike out on his own and the Serie D is the first cigar to result from the journey. Again calling upon the talents in the Pepin factory for production, Eddie has crafted the Natural version of the cigar to feature a diverse blend of long leaf tobaccos from the Jalapa and Esteli regions of Nicaragua which are then draped in an Habano Rosado wrapper.

Distinguished from the Maduro version of the Serie D by gold highlighting in the band, the Natural is sharply box-pressed and the wrapper is rough and dry with a cedar-like aroma that displays an unusual faint mustiness. This is far from an unpleasant smell and adds intrigue to what flavors lie hidden beneath. The first smoking impressions are a continuation of the woodsy character of the wrapper, but as the cigar begins to pour more and more smoke through the smooth draw, hints of caramel and chocolate can be found. Pepin's influence can be found about the halfway point when just the right amount of spice shows up to make the rest of the cigar an experience in pure enjoyment and relaxation.

The Ortega Serie D tends more to the medium side in body, although a slight increase in strength near the end may cause some dizziness for less experienced smokers. A stogie this tasty at this price point makes it a cigar to fit equally well while playing 18 holes, swapping tales at the 19th over cold beers, or after dinner with more intimate company. Cigars with similar strength, flavor, and value are the 5 Vegas Classic and Padron Natural.
