The only thing that really needs to be said about the San Lotano Oval Maduro is the name of its maker, A.J. Fernandez. For those in the know this will be enough to provoke adding a box or two to their order, but for the uninitiated it may take some more persuading. To that end, you can judge a man by the company he keeps and in recent years A.J.'s list of clients rivals anyone in the business. Rocky Patel, K. Hansotia of Gurkha, Ernesto Padilla. These and more have all released extremely popular cigars created by Fernandez, yet at the same time he has been building his own stable of studs. Perhaps his most captivating is the San Lotano line, and of these, the Oval is top dog. A 96-rated cigar considered one of the top releases in 2011, the San Lotano Oval is loaded with A.J.'s own secret blend of Nicaraguan and Honduran tobaccos hiding behind a Habano 2000 wrapper, all of it pressed into the unique rounded shape for which it it named.

The oval shape, which fits comfortably in hand, along with the San Lotano Oval name large and in-charge on the band, makes it no mystery what cigar is about to go under the flame. The aesthetics of the cigar may be appreciated if one so desires, but most will have trouble finding their cutter quickly enough before clipping the dark, toothy end cap. Chocolatey out of the gate, the cigar pours on some spice as it begins to dig in during the first leg. The spices begin to stretch out midway through, getting into a rhythm to match strides with a sweetness that won't cause the smoker to become overpowered. Rounding the bend, the San Lotano Oval's flavors line up behind a creaminess that initially lay hidden until emerging to bring everything home to well-deserved fanfare.

Not nearly as full-bodied as might be expected, the San Lotano Oval is still best appreciated by more experienced smokers. Grab a drink, anything from a vodka tonic to a robust red wine to a half bottle of lukewarm water, a seat and get to smoking. You won't regret it. While you're at it, take the time to wager on some of A.J. Fernandez's other offerings as well: Man O' War, Diesel, or Nica Libre.
