The La Palina Family Series is a cigar that picks up where an old time brand left off. The original La Palina brand was originally released over a century ago by Ukrainian immigrant Samuel Paley and finally put to rest with his retirement in 1926. In 2010, however, Bill Paley, grandson of Samuel, set out to revive the brand in search of the perfect cigar to enjoy at the Lightbourne House, the Paley family retreat in the Bahamas. After getting in touch and working extensively with the infamous master blender Avelino Lara, who blended the original Cuban Cohibas, the final blend was pinpointed with which to bring La Palina back to life. Handmade in Enrico Garzioli's factory at Graycliff in Nassau, this top-shelf ultra premium cigar consists of Honduran and Nicaraguan ligero fillers, a Costa Rican binder, and either a Costa Rican or Ecuadorian wrapper leaf, depending on the size. The Babe and Pasha are cloaked with a Costa Rican wrapper, while a spicy Ecuadorian is used for the Alison and Little Bill sizes.
The cigar carries a beautiful appearance to go along with its rich history and ultra-premium classification. A smooth caramel-brown wrapper leaf is smooth as silk and adorned with an illustrious gold and white band with a picture of Samuel Paley's wife, Goldie Drell Paley, whom the cigar was originally named after. A firm draw brings about flavors of earthiness and grass, with a pronounced finish of citrus and clove. The Costa Rican wrapped variety is unmistakeably mild to medium, while the Ecuadorian wrapper adds a touch of spice and an extra kick to the cigar, boosting it into the realm of medium-bodied.
The La Palina is a cigar worthy of celebrations and special occasions, but is a terrific choice when one simply wants to kick back and enjoy life. The cigar is not overwhelming in strength and would go well with a medium-bodied red wine or a glass of smooth bourbon. Other cigar choices for fans of the La Palina may include the Montecristo and Macanudo. Enjoy a La Palina cigar, and bask in over a century of tradition and quality.
