La Terraza was Ernesto Padilla's attempt to get back into the $5 cigar market, and in 2011 he quietly introduced one of the best value cigars of the year. Offered in two different wrappers (a Nicaraguan Habano and a Brazilian maduro), Padilla makes at La Terraza at the Raíces Cubanas factory in Danlí, Honduras, the same factory that has made seven of Cigar Aficionado's Top 25 cigars of the year over the past two years. Inspiration comes from Ernesto's father, Heberto, who was a renowned Cuban poet and Padilla chose a writing theme for this cigar, naming it after the iconic restaurant in Havana where Ernest Hemingway would famously dock his boat.
This Padilla La Terraza Maduro Toro cigar starts with a great diversity of chocolate, quickly joined by pepper, cedar and earth. It's a bit sweeter and fuller than the La Terraza Habano, although the pepper is a bit less prominent than in the lighter wrapper. Just because it's made in Honduras doesn't mean this isn't made to go neck and neck with Nicaragua's finest, remember, it's made at the same factory responsible for award-winning Alec Bradleys, Illusiones and Viajes. For those looking to get a full-bodied, full-flavored cigar without breaking the bank, it's hard to beat the Padilla La Terraza Maduro.
