Tatuaje Cigars are one of the newest micro-brands to hit it big in the cigar world. “Tatuaje” means tattoo in Spanish. These cigars are blended as a partnership between “Tattoo” Pete Johnson and the cigar master himself, Don Pepin Garcia. Pete Johnson's background is that of a cigar buyer for the super swanky, ultra-exclusive Grand Havana Room of Beverly Hills. I guess one day he wanted to start making cigars of his own. These are full flavored, yet medium bodied cigars, a pleasure to smoke at anytime of the day. The Tatuaje Reservas can be split into 2 categories.
The Tatuaje Cojonu 2003, Gran Cojonu, Cojonu 2006, Cojonu 2009, RC 184, RC 233, Reserva A Uno, Reserva SW, and Reserva J21 are all made in Miami using Nicaraguan fillers and binders that are lovingly cradled with an Ecuadoran Habano wrapper.
The Tatuaje Petite Tatuaje Reserva, Petite Cazadores Reserva, and 7th Reserva are all rolled by Jaime Garcia at the My Father Cigars Factory in Nicaragua using the same binder and filler as the Miami line but this time with a Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper.
All of these cigars feature the blending and appearance of the old world Cuban cigars, right down to the skillfully applied triple cap. The flavor notes we find in this Tatuaje line are cedar wood, with hints of spice, cocoa, and pepper.
Despite being blended by Don Pepin, this cigar is slightly less flavorful than we've come to expect from him, but perhaps that is exactly what Pete Johnson is looking for. Judging by how fast these Tatuaje cigars fly off our shelves, Pete's on the right track.
