Arturo Fuente Gran Reserva Maduro cigars demonstrate how something as simple as a different wrapper leaf can completely change the entire character of a cigar. Like the Arturo Fuente Gran Reserva Natural line, they are made up of Dominican fillers and binders, all grown on the world-renowned Fuente tobacco farms and aged in classic Fuente fashion. For this version, however, Carlos Fuente Jr. decided to wrap them in a silky US Connecticut broadleaf maduro wrapper. This simple change takes the cigar to an entirely different realm of richness and body, embracing the connoisseur in a world of warm cigar bliss. Like all Arturo Fuente cigars, these are left to age for an extended length of time in cedar vaults for the flavors to “marry.” The outcome is a lovely cigar that became an instant classic at its introduction, and to this day remains part of America's single best-selling line of cigars.

A very smooth and velvety wrapper leaf adorns this cigar, dark and rich in appearance. A few pre-light puffs reveal a very easy draw and a notable presence of dry cocoa. After lighting, the stick gives off a barrage of very thick smoke bathed with notes of coffee and chocolate. A crisp spice hits the palate as the classic maduro taste leaves behind Carlos Fuente Jr.'s signature sweet finish. This version is much fuller than the natural. Smoking this stick is very relaxing and enjoyable.

All in all, the Fuente Gran Reserva Maduro is a fine cigar at a very pleasant price point. The body is medium-full, so its a great choice for smokers looking to step into the fuller-bodied realm of the cigar world. Beginners and experienced connoisseurs alike can enjoy this great cigar that soared to the top at its introduction and never looked back. It's a great morning coffee cigar and might also be complimented by a full-bodied red wine if enjoyed later in the day. Comparable cigars to this include the Perdomo ESV 2002 Maduro and La Aroma de Cuba. If someone were to invent a Hall of Fame for cigars, the Arturo Fuente Gran Reserva, whether Natural or Maduro, would without a doubt be one of the first inductees.
