Ashton Virgin Sun Grown Cigars
Ashton Virgin Sun Grown
Released in 1999, the Ashton Virgin Sun Grown (VSG) cigar represents the evolution of Ashton from an respectable Cigar Boom-era line into a premium brand capable of satisfying smokers who prefer modern, fuller-bodied blends. An early 93 rating has consistently been upheld by more recent reviews and continued demand has proven the VSG capable of finding new fans as well as keeping knowledgeable aficionados coming back for more. Blended by Carlos Fuente Jr. of Tabacalera Fuente, the cigar utilizes 4 and 5 year old Dominican tobaccos tucked into a redolent Ecuadoran wrapper hailing from a private estate held by the Oliva family and produced specifically for the VSG.
Slowly matured by filtered sunlight and cut from the higher parts of the plant, the rugged and oily wrapper yields slightly to pressure but the body is pleasantly firm. A full pre-light exam displays aromas of fresh cut grass and wood smoke and the filler serves up hints of cocoa. Upon lighting the Ashton VSG burns cool and slow with a solid ash, and the thick smoke releases an immediate syrupy sweetness full of black cherry and leather essences. The second third of the cigar gains vanilla and oak overtones while the strength begins to increase to full-bodied, and the final third ratchets up the enjoyment by adding exotic spices to the mix. Burned fingers are almost guaranteed.
Experienced smokers should grab a tawny port and sit back after a meal to watch the sun set while smoking the Ashton Virgin Sun Grown. Those familiar with Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial or Padilla Signature 1932 will find, while not quite the same flavor profile, a similar ever-changing and exciting smoking session.
